Trailers, Hitches and Towing

Towing goes wrong at the connection: the hitch, the wiring, the brakes, the bearings. We install and set up hitches, wire the controller, and service the trailer itself, which is the half that usually gets ignored until it fails on a grade.

What it usually turns out to be

You do not need a diagnosis to call. Describe what it is doing and we will tell you whether it is a shop job.

The trailer sways behind you, and you have started slowing down for trucks

Sway is a setup problem far more often than a driving problem. We look at tongue weight and how the load sits, at the weight distribution setup, and at whether the hitch is right for the combination in the first place. A rig that sways is telling you something about the balance, and it usually gets worse loaded than empty.

The nose of the tow vehicle rides high and the steering feels light

Classic weight distribution symptom: the tongue is levering weight off the front axle, which is the axle doing your steering and most of your braking. Setting this up properly is measurement, not eyeballing, and it is worth doing with the rig loaded the way you actually travel.

The trailer brakes grab, or do nothing, or work only sometimes

Could be the controller, the wiring, the magnets or the shoes, and intermittent almost always means a connection. We test the whole circuit from the controller to the drums rather than replacing the controller and hoping.

A bearing is running hot, or you can hear it

Stop using it. A wheel bearing that has started making noise is on a short clock, and the failure takes the spindle with it, which turns a cheap job into an axle. We repack, inspect and replace, and we will tell you honestly whether the spindle survived.

The lights work on one plug and not on another

Almost always the connector, the ground, or a chafed run rather than the bulbs. Trailer wiring lives underneath in the weather and it corrodes at the joins. We chase it back rather than splicing over it.

You bought a trailer and want to know if your truck can pull it

Bring both if you can, and bring the paperwork. Tow ratings are set by the manufacturer, not by us, and the honest answer sometimes is that the combination is at its limit. We would rather tell you that in the yard than have you find out on a grade.

What we do

  • Hitch installation and setup
  • Weight distribution and sway control setup
  • Brake controller installation
  • Trailer wiring, connectors and lighting
  • Trailer brake service
  • Wheel bearing service and repack
  • Wheel, rim and tire work on towed loads
  • Brakes on the coach and on what it tows, same visit

Will it fit

The question owners ask first and almost nobody answers on a website.

Two yard entrances is what makes a long rig easy to get in and back out of. Call with your length before you drive over and we will tell you whether it fits and when the bay is free.

What we do not do here

  • We are a shop, not a mobile service, and for towing work the yard matters as much as the bays. Two entrances is what lets a truck with a fifth wheel behind it get in, get turned and get back out. You can arrive towing.
  • We are not publishing hitch classes and weight ratings on this page. Those are specific numbers, they depend on your vehicle and your trailer, and we would rather work them out with you against your paperwork than post a table you might match yourself to incorrectly.
  • Tow ratings come from the manufacturer of your vehicle. We will set a combination up properly and tell you what we see, but we do not raise a rating and neither does anybody else.
  • Trailer modification and fabrication is work we will talk about rather than advertise. Anything load-bearing deserves a conversation about exactly what you want and exactly how it will be done, not a line item on a website.

Before you call, have this handy

None of it is required. It just gets you a real answer on the first call instead of the second.

Both ends of the combination

The tow vehicle and the trailer, year, make and model for each. Half the questions in this category cannot be answered from one end alone, and the paperwork for both is worth bringing.

What you are actually towing, and how heavy it is loaded

Loaded weight, not dry weight, and where the weight sits. A toy hauler with the machines at the back behaves nothing like the same trailer loaded forward.

What is fitted now

Existing hitch, controller, bars, and who fitted them. If the previous setup was done elsewhere, that is not a problem, it just tells us where to start looking.

Where you take it

A trailer that goes over the Sierra loaded gets a different look from one that goes to the lake empty. Grades are hard on brakes and bearings and it changes what we check first.

Questions

Questions we get asked

Can I turn up towing, without an appointment?

Call first, but the yard is genuinely built for it: two entrances, so a truck and a fifth wheel can come in one way and leave the other without a twenty-point turn. That matters more in this category than any other, because you cannot just park a rig and trailer anywhere while you wait.

Can you do the brakes on my trailer and on the coach in one visit?

Yes, and it is the sensible way to do it. Brakes on the coach and brakes on what you tow are one system as far as stopping is concerned, and doing them at two different places is how one end quietly ends up doing more work than it should.

What class of hitch do I need?

That depends on your vehicle, your trailer and how you load it, so we will not guess at it on a webpage. Bring both and the paperwork, and it is a short conversation rather than a long one.

Do you service the trailer itself, not just the hookup?

Yes. Bearings, brakes, wiring, wheels and tires. The trailer is the half that gets ignored until something fails on it, usually a long way from home.

What about the trailer my side-by-side or the boat rides on?

Call and describe it. A lot of what comes through here is towed behind something else towed behind something, and a utility trailer takes the same bearings, brakes and wiring as any other. If it is not work for us we will say so.

Can you modify a trailer or a vehicle for the way I tow?

Sometimes, and it is a conversation rather than an order form. Anything load-bearing deserves a proper discussion about what you want and how it would be done. Bring it in and describe the problem you are trying to solve.

Talk to someone who works on these

Call the shop and we will tell you the soonest realistic date rather than book you and hold your rig. Mon-Fri 8:00 - 5:00, Saturday 8:00 - 12:00.
