Nevada VIN Inspection
Nevada requires a VIN inspection before you can register a vehicle brought in from out of state. It is a short, simple thing, and most people meet it for the first time on the day they are trying to do something else. Here is what it is and what to bring. You just moved to Nevada and the DMV mentioned a VIN inspection
Standard for a vehicle coming in from another state. Somebody authorized to do it physically checks that the number on the vehicle matches the number on your paperwork, and signs the form that says so. It is a records check, not a mechanical inspection, and nothing about the condition of the vehicle is being judged.
You bought a vehicle out of state and want to register it here
Same requirement, and it is worth sorting before you spend a morning at the DMV. The number on the form has to match the number on the vehicle, so the paperwork you bring matters as much as the vehicle does.
You are not sure whether yours needs one at all
The DMV is the authority on that and it is worth a call to them, because the answer depends on where the vehicle is coming from and what kind it is. We can tell you what we know, but we would rather you got the definitive answer from the people who issue the registration.

- We do not do registration, title work, plates or smog. Those are separate things at separate places, and a VIN inspection is only ever the one narrow check.
- A VIN inspection is not a mechanical or safety inspection. Nobody is assessing the condition of your vehicle, and passing one says nothing about whether it is roadworthy.
- The DMV sets the rules on who needs one and what counts. Where our answer and theirs ever differ, theirs is the one that matters.
Before you call, have this handy
None of it is required. It just gets you a real answer on the first call instead of the second.
The title, or whatever ownership paperwork you have
This is the document with the number that has to match. Out-of-state title, a bill of sale, or the registration from where the vehicle came from.
The vehicle itself
It has to be physically present. This is the one thing that cannot be done from a photograph or over the phone.
Whatever the DMV handed you
If they gave you a form or told you which one they need, bring it. Forms change and the one they asked for is the one that counts.

Can you do my VIN inspection?
Call the shop and ask before you drive over. We would rather give you a straight answer on the phone than have you make the trip on the strength of a webpage.
What actually happens in one?
Somebody authorized to do it looks at the vehicle, confirms the identification number matches your paperwork, and signs the form saying so. It takes minutes. Nothing about the condition of the vehicle is being assessed.
Do I need one?
Generally if you are registering a vehicle in Nevada that came from out of state. The DMV is the authority and it is worth asking them directly, because the answer depends on the vehicle and where it came from.
Is this a safety inspection?
No. It is a paperwork check, not a mechanical one. Nobody is deciding whether your vehicle is roadworthy and passing does not mean it is.
Can you register it for me while I am there?
No. Registration, title and plates are DMV business and we do not do any of them. The inspection is only ever the one narrow check.
